One of the sixteen personality types

INFJ

The everyday you

As an INFJ, you sense where things are going before you can say how you know. You tend the room, so that everyone in it is all right. You make things make sense in private. And your weakest habit, the one that overwhelms you fastest, is noticing what is right in front of you.

At your best you see the shape of a situation before anyone has described it, and you use that to look after the people in it. You are conscientious, private, and quietly decisive once you know what matters. The cost is that you can over-extend for other people, lose track of your own body and your own evening, and trust a conclusion before the evidence has caught up.

The Subconscious: a figure with a hand mirror for a head
Subconsciouswho you reach toward, and where you feel measured
ESTP

noticing what's here Se · making it make sense Ti · tending the room Fe · sensing where it's going Ni

You admire the person who walks into a room and simply handles it. She notices what is actually there, acts on it, and enjoys the moment without needing it to mean anything. That ease with the physical present is your weakest habit turned into her strength, so you feel measured against it, and you reach for it when you let yourself.

The Unconscious: a figure cut from black paper, hurrying with an umbrella
Unconsciouswho shows up under stress, and what you can't stand in others
ENFP

Under real stress the long view goes dark. You fixate on details and sensations, overdo food or spending or thrills, and treat the outside world as an opponent. Later you say it was not like you. That is your Unconscious, your four habits turned the other way, protecting you badly. It is also why an easy, scattered enthusiasm in someone else can grate on you.

The Superego: a figure with a paper mask taped over the face
Superegothe shoulds; the self you perform for other people
ISTJ

When you are watched, or on duty, you play the reliable one: the steady worker who keeps the record, follows the procedure, and does what is done. It is a role, and you can hold it well for an afternoon. Held too long it turns brittle, because it runs on rules you absorbed rather than chose. Setting it down is allowed.

Your family

An INFJ’s four selves are INFJ, ESTP, ENFP, and ISTJ. Those four types share one set of selves, which makes them a family, and every one of the sixteen types belongs to one of four families. That is why your other three are the same as every other INFJ’s, and why they can be compared with anyone’s. INFJ is in the North family.

Your type, or its neighborThe question that separates them
INFJ or INFPNi-Fe vs Fi-Ne — zero shared functions. Do you instinctively read and manage others' emotional field, or survey your own feelings and values? INFJ is less in touch with her own feelings; INFP is much more attuned to them. INFJ moves toward one bold conclusion; INFP toward many possibilities and can look indecisive.
INFJ or INTJBoth Ni-lead; auxiliary Te vs Fe. Does your second move optimize the system and handle conflict comfortably, or prioritize harmony and other people's feelings?
INFJ or ISFJShare Fe (and Ne at the bottom); the lead differs: Ni vs Si. Do you recall how it has been — specific past details, routines, precedent — or intuit where it is heading?

A detail worth knowing: for introverts, the last letter describes the second function, not the first. Your lead function works on the inside; what the world sees is the second. That is why the types below can look alike from the outside and feel completely different from within.
